Global health programs for medical students


















We will connect you with a mentor who is currently involved in global health research, at Duke and abroad. The program provides orientation on the responsible conduct of research, cross-cultural competency and travel safety, as well as guidance on identifying and applying for external global health research opportunities and funding.

You can undertake laboratory or clinical research in a variety of settings, from hospitals to community-based clinics or service organizations. Opportunities are strongest in locations where Duke has well-established research partnerships, such as Moshi, Tanzania; Eldoret, Kenya; and Galle, Sri Lanka. The School of Medicine and the Graduate School offer a limited number of scholarships.

Students complete coursework, service projects, and international experiences. Learn more about the Global Health Pathway. It was created by medical students in collaboration with faculty and staff in response to requests to have a meaningful, field-based global health experience early in medical training.

GHIP is an intensive, academically rigorous program for students who want to gain a first-hand understanding of the health challenges facing people in low- and middle-income countries.

If you are a third year medical student at the University of Washington School of Medicine interested in applying for this program, plan on blocking off at least six consecutive weeks in winter or spring quarter during your fourth year schedule.
