Hidden files checkbox grayed out

Hi Dave, I don't know what's going on but now i can't search for anything under the Start search function. As soon as i click on the Start button a large black box appears, dots scroll across the top of the black box as though it was searching but the black box remains empty.

As described above nothing comes up regardless of what i type. I just get the black box no matter what i type be it 'cmd' or 'winver'. I'm responding to you on my phone so I'm not sure how to click on the link I'm assuming i need to follow the link on my laptop.
