Install 70v
High-voltage or constant-voltage speaker systems significantly simplify the installation of multiple-speaker systems in direct comparison to their low impedance counterparts i. There is no need for any series, parallel combinations, or corresponding complex load calculations. In fact for the majority of installations, calculations are strictly a matter of adding the wattage tap ratings of each speaker and ensuring you do not exceed the limits of your power amplifier. The main component of a 25V, 70V or V system is the speaker transformer.
In most cases you would purchase your speaker with an integrated transformer, and use the built in switch selector to choose your power tap. This power tap indicates the maximum power the speaker can receive. Select the correct tap setting for 25V, 70V or V speakers, based on the wattage required to produce the desired sound pressure level for your application allowing for some additional power headroom. Reducing the tap settings may be feasible at the expense of headroom. Confirm the load impedance is at or above the amplifiers minimum impedance spec to avoid distortion.
If you have purchased your transformer separate from the speaker not recommended, but sometimes unavoidable , you will first need to connect its secondary winding to your speaker.
The transformer typically has taps at various impedances i. The primary winding also typically has several taps. Choose the tap that will deliver the desired wattage to that speaker.
To use this calculator first find the spec sheet for the speaker you intend to use. The distance from the loudspeaker to the listener position should be application specific. Alternatively if the typical listening position is a standing position with an ear height around 5.
If you are into damaging your hearing a rock concert is around dB SPL same as running a chainsaw or leaf blower. See this link for different decibel ratings. For the majority of applications I do, I set this figure to dB SPL which provides some additional headroom without getting into ear damaging territory.
Assuming the ceiling speakers comprise a 70v system, can I use a regular pro-audio amp to power them? Staff member. Jan 10, 10, 29 48 37 Wallingford, CT www. Re: Can nonv amplifiers be used with 70v ceiling speakers? Please change your login to your real name in your profile, as specified in the FAQ. Craig Hauber Sophomore. I think a W at 8-ohm amp will approximately equal If doing that then you can load the line up to considerably more "watts" than as most amps at 8-ohms don't have a problem maintaining the same voltage at lower impedances.
With the costs of cheap power nowadays it's not a bad way to go -removes the need for an output transformer on the amp design making it lighter and smaller. You still have to be careful of LF though as saturated line speaker transformers and attenuators start to resemble a short-circuit. Using a smaller amp may work but the overall output might not get high enough. If the speakers are tapped at low wattages then moving it to the higher tap might give you enough.
Gus Housen Freshman. Jan 17, 61 0 0 49 Silverdale, Washington, United States www. You can use a regular amplifier over wpc but you may want to build some kind of high pass filter so you dont saturate the coils on the 70 volt transformers.
Brad Weber Junior. Jan 12, 1 0 Marietta, GA www. Simple answer, Ohm's law says that you can direct drive an 8 Ohm load at As already noted, especially with lower cost speaker transformers it may be desired to apply a high pass filter to avoid saturating the transformers at low frequencies.
Lower output amps can also often be used to drive 70V systems by adding external output transformers.
